Since 2003 Hans Smeekes (1947) and his wife Fifi from Holland are very much in love with Bali. Staying in Ubud for 2 months every year they make their daily trips all over Bali, as ´the young archaeologists´ as they call themselves jokingly, in search of temples with an interesting (hi)story. Meeting people, making friends: in the temples with the priests, in the palaces with the royal families and with the people in the streets. Always interested in their stories. To find out about the real Bali. As artlovers they found out that in fact every Balinese is in some way an artist. Hans and Fifi have also their art: as ´the art of living´ they expose their attitude in life, based on the Buddhist philosophy. Not aiming for anything, just ´be´. Before finding their ‘second home’ on Bali the inseparable duo travelled through India, Nepal, Malaysia and Tibet. In 2012 the BBC World News used some video material of Hans on the occasion of Galungan.
