A film by Sara Taksler.
Following the Arab Spring and in need of a laugh, Dr. Bassem Youssef left heart surgery to try his hand at comedy. Al Bernameg, the first political satire show in Egypt, had 30 million weekly viewers. An average episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has an audience of 2 million. “Tickling Giants” follows key staff members of Al Bernameg as they show that comedy can be cathartic. While the violence chosen by many Egyptians may make a statement, Al Bernameg’s staff is heard through their satire, not their fists. This is a Cinderella story gone awry. A regular guy became one of the most famous people in the world. Then, the military comes back to power and a few days later, it’s all over. Art and free speech were right back where they started, with the exception being, now Egyptians know what it was like to have more - and many of them are willing to fight for it.
